During the 1920's, in order to facilitate the construction of the Exeter Road, Braunton's original 'Railway Hotel' was demolished and The George Hotel built by the entrance of the new road in the centre of the village. Built by Local authority tradesmen and designed by a local achitect, it has been busy ever since in 'The Heart of England's Largest Village' Having been recently refurbished, The George still retains the elegance and style of the 1930's whilst enjoying up to date comforts. It is easy to get a feel of the past in the bars with visitors that have ranged from American G.I.'s, training in the area before heading over to France in World War II to London's famous Kray twins, who reputedly enjoyed a tipple in The George on their visits to North Devon.
